Motorized Standing Desk vs. Height Adjustable Standing Desk: Which is Best?

A standing desk can help you stop smoking! Wait, what?!

That's not us talking, that's the Business Insider. Other benefits they noted are increased energy and focus, fewer headaches, and higher concentration levels. In their test run, they actually quantified a 10% increase in productivity thanks to working at standing desks.

But before you run out and buy your miracle office furniture, you need to slow down and make the right decision. There are a lot of factors beyond just "standing" to consider so you can be sure to make the best decision on buying a standing desk. One of the most common discussions is, "do I get a motorized standing desk or do I go with a manually adjustable desk?"

Motorized vs. Height-Adjustable Standing Desks

If you're trying to decide between a motorized or manually adjustable standing desk, the right choice really depends on what you're after. Manually adjustable standing desks are cheaper than motorized versions. But they are also a lot harder to raise, lower, and adjust. I say this from experience, having tried to adjust the four legs of my desk to a level height. If I ever could have benefited from being an octopus with 8 arms, it was that day.

So before you run out and buy a bargain-priced adjustable standing desk, let's look at the pros and cons of each so you can decide which one you really need.

Height-Adjustable Desks

There are several different kinds of height-adjustable desks. Some allow you set the height when you initially set up your desk, but they don't make it easy to make any adjustments after the initial set up. Others are motorized ( some even have memory), making the transition from sitting to standing during the day pretty simple.

Basic Height-Adjustable Desk

If you're looking for that one, perfect desk height, then you may not want a ton of bells and whistles. Many standing desks allow you to adjust the legs when you put your desk together so your desk top is right where you want it.

The major drawback is that it's a huge pain if you need to make any changes later on. You'll probably end up taking everything off your desk, readjusting, and then setting up again. Not so fun, especially if you want to benefit from both standing and sitting throughout the day. This option simply doesn't give you any flexibility.

Manual Height-Adjustable Desk

Some height-adjustable desks have a crank that allows you to manually make adjustments with the turn of a handle. Going from a sitting position to standing can take place in about 38 turns. This option gives you more flexibility when it comes to alternating between standing and sitting during the day, which will give you the most health and productivity benefits.

Motorized Height-Adjustable Desk

If you want to take it one step further, you can buy a motorized standing desk that allows you to transition easily with the click of a button. There are several automatic, height-adjustable desks available, and some of them have the option of memory so you can save height settings. You can get all the benefits of a sit-to-stand desk along with the ease of adjusting the desk's height.

Motorized standing desks may cost a little more than the basic or manual options, so you really have to decide if it's an important feature for you.

Which Desk Is Best?

It all comes down to what you want from your height-adjustable standing desk. If you're looking for a desk that can be set at the perfect height and you don't plan on changing it, you can save money with a basic adjustable standing desk. The motorized option may cost more, but it provides faster adjustments, which means you can sit when you need to and stand when you need to. The manual options give you similar results, but with a little more effort required on your part.

The best thing to do is ask yourself why you're investing in a standing desk and then make sure you choose the option that will meet your needs.
